Oil and Empire: Historical, Cultural, and Political Dimensions of Petroleum in Galicia and Beyond

Cluster of Excellence EurAsian Transformations | International Conference

The conference responds to a significant gap in petrofiction scholarship, which remains dominated by Anglophone contexts. It seeks to re-center Galicia—and similar Eurasian sites—as crucial but overlooked regions in the cultural history of oil. Drawing on interdisciplinary approaches from environmental humanities, literary studies, and imperial history, participants will analyze both historical and literary texts that reflect on the transformations wrought by petroleum extraction.
