Muḥammad Pārsā’s (d. 1420) library: History and overview of the collection

Webinar series "Pre-modern Islamic manuscripts"

Online lecture by Dr. Akram Habibulla | Indiana University, Bloomington

Khwāja Muḥammad Pārsā is a scholar-theologian, commentator of Qur’ān (mufassir), Ḥanafī jurist (faqīh) and traditionalist (muḥaddith). He has played a major role in spread of the Khwājagānī-Naqšbandī, sufi order in Transoxiana. He died in Medina returning from his second pilgrimage to Mecca and has left several works on theology and Sufism. Muḥammad Pārsā was also a bibliophile and collector of manuscripts. The library associated with his name housed hundreds of important manuscripts but hasn’t survived intact. Its contents are now scattered and divided among several institutions in various countries. This presentation aims at shedding light on library’s history and giving an overview of the collection.

This lecture is the seventh of a Webinar series organised by the NoMansLand research project (FWF Y 1232) dedicated to the study of Islamic manuscripts in pre-modern Iran and Central Asia.
