Cell differentiation in a tractable system developing from a single apolar spore

I am investigating the role of transcription factors promoting rhizoid differentiation in the establishment of cell identity in the early development of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. For this, I am using time-lapse imaging starting from the single spore cell alongside transcriptomic analysis. Currently, I am analysing the effects of mutants in which these processes are perturbed and characteristing the alternative cell differentiation trajectories observed.

I am interested in how the cells in multicellular organisms become different from one another and how this is modified over evolutionary time. I have used the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha as a model system, focusing on pigmentation (in Cambridge) and filamentous rooting cells (at the GMI).
