Administration & Infrastructure

The administration & infrastructure services at the GMI ensure smooth day-to-day operations. 

Researchers at the GMI are supported by administrative and infrastructure staff, who ensure smooth day-to-day operations. To increase synergies, administrative staff is shared by GMI and IMBA, the two life science research institutes of the Austrian Academy of Sciences located at the Vienna BioCenter. The infrastructure team enhances resource sharing across the GMI, IMBA and IMP. This collaborative approach ensures an efficient use of resources and fosters a cooperative environment.

Administration

Accounting is responsible for financial controlling and bookkeeping.

Assistant and Special Projects organizes seminars, conferences, and the annual retreat and SAB meetings.

The Cafeteria team offers breakfast, warm lunch meal options, as well as an assortment of sweets and beverages, preparing around 700 meals daily for in-house staff. 

The Communication and Public Outreach team makes research at the GMI accessible for diverse audiences. The team engages with the press, creates outreach opportunities, organizes events, and manages the website and social media channels.

Controlling and Grants Management team provides information on grant opportunities, assists in preparing proposals, and is responsible for financial reporting and audits.

The Human Resources team supports staff in relation to employment and living in Austria, including helping with visa and work permit issues.

The Project Management Office supports individual projects by providing the tools, templates, and guidance needed to help project managers stay on track and avoid common mistakes. At the same time, it monitors and coordinates all ongoing projects (the project portfolio) together with a board consisting of the managing directors and selected department heads. 

The Technology Transfer Office manages the intellectual prperty assets and the transfer of knowledge, materials and technology to partners, including spin-off companies. 

 

Infrastructure

The Environtmental Health and Safety team implements occupational health and safety measures at the GMI. The EHS team provides support in fulfilling legal requirements in accordance with the Employee Protection Act. EHS takes targeted measures in the work and disposal channels to protect the environment and employees. The health of employees is supported by occupational health programs. 

Facility Management is responsible for building management, technical equipment, waste disposal and operational support. 

The IT Department operates and supports services including High Performance Computing (CLIP), as well a hard- and software and data storage. 

The Lab Support team supports scientists in their experiments. Their services range from a central supply of chemicals and consumables, to the maintenance and repair of lab equipment, and plant pathogen control.

The Max Perutz Library supports researchers with access to literature, advises about open access publishing, and supports the implementation of Electronic Laboratory Notebooks. 

The Mechanical Engineering Center assists scientists in any hardware challenge: designing and building prototypes, robotics or any custom-made experimental setup that requires expert skills and professional tools to translate ideas into custom-made products in the service of discovery. 

The Purchasing/Store Department is responsible for all purchasing activities at the institute and runs a 24/7 store for high-turnover items.

Reception provides the first point of contact for directions, visitor check‑in, mail & deliveries, and on‑site accessibility assistance.

The Sterile Processing Department provides researchers directly and indirectly via the Media Preparation Lab with sterile glassware and sterilized lab-plastic ware. They also collect, clean and sterilize glassware.

Technology Transfer Office
