The research program aims to gain a more comprehensive understanding of meiosis and how asexually reproducing organisms “repurpose” meiotic mechanisms in parthenogenesis.  Frédéric Berger, group leader at the GMI, will join the consortium in the second successful funding round, expanding the repertoire of model organisms and contributing expertise on mechanisms of meiosis in plants.

The SFB, coordinated by Verena Jantsch-Plunger (Max Perutz Labs and the University of Vienna), includes research groups from the Vienna BioCenter, including the GMI, the Max Perutz Labs, IMBA and IMP, in addition to groups from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, and EMBL Heidelberg.
