The Institute for European Tort Law and the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law cordially invite you to the next ETL Lecture. David Messner-Kreuzbauer presents his paper on ‘When chatbots manipulate, mislead and steal: liability for GPAI in Europe' on Monday, 15 June 2026, at 15:00.
Just a few years ago, most analysts would have presumed that civil liability for artificial intelligence systems would primarily concern autonomous cars or drones. Now, however, unembodied chatbots and other generative AI systems are giving rise to a wave of litigation, particularly in the United States. The lecture will identify important case types and assess the prospects of litigation in European jurisdictions.
David Messner-Kreuzbauer is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute for European Tort Law under the Austrian Academy of Sciences and at the University of Graz. He has been a research assistant of the Institute for European Tort Law since 2015 and a research and teaching assistant of the Centre for European Private Law at the University of Graz from 2019 to 2022. He is involved in several international and interdisciplinary research projects (some of them in a leading function). One of his latest projects concerns the liability of generative AI in Europe.
The lecture is scheduled for 30 minutes, with an opportunity for discussion afterwards.
The lecture will take place in the Seminar Room of ECTIL/ETL (Reichsratsstraße 17/2, 1010 Wien) and online. Participation is free of charge. If you would like to attend, please register by sending an email to etl(at)oeaw.ac.at and francesca.leucci(at)oeaw.ac.at.
