What structural barriers hinder access to housing in Vienna? This question was the focus of a panel discussion organised by the student-led initiative CareKit, in which Judith Schnelzer (Housing and Urban Economy Working Group at the ISR) took part as an expert.

Together with representatives from politics and the field, including Markus Hollendohner (FSW), Bernadett Sebály (CEU) and Gabriel Winkelmüller (Caritas Vienna), the experts discussed the complex challenges between housing policy strategies and the lived reality of homelessness in the Viennese context.

Judith Schnelzer contributed the ISR’s current research on displacement and the prevention of homelessness to shed light on the causes of homelessness from both a systemic and a lived perspective. The evening concluded with a lively audience discussion on the future of housing provision in Vienna.

The event was part of a transnational project taking place simultaneously in Vienna, Paris and Madrid, aiming to raise awareness of homelessness and reduce social stigma by combining academic debate with practical support, such as the distribution of hygiene kits. The event was organised by CEU students and supported by the CIVICA Student Engagement Fund.
