Thanks to its (ethno-)musicological collections, the Phonogrammarchiv has always stayed in close contact with researchers in these fields as well as with relevant university and Academy institutes and international associations, thereby following the developments and emerging new approaches in these disciplines. When dealing with extant (and, in the course of long-term research activities, expanding) as well as freshly initiated collections, contextual and methodological investigations and the faithful recording of ancillary information and data generate added value that fosters the further utilization and analysis of such audio-visual sources. This may also create new sets of problems and result in research projects that apply novel methodological approaches, thus opening new vistas. Such research enriches the collected materials and often also brings to light facts that have hitherto escaped attention.
