Bernhard Riederer and Isabella Buber-Ennser analyzed rural-urban differences in the realization of fertility intentions with longitudinal data from 11 European countries. While realization is lower in urban than in rural regions, in particular postponement of childbearing is much more common in cities. This can be explained by differences in characteristics of people who want a(nother) child (e.g. age, partnership status) and by contextual factors like educational and economic opportunities.
