Rothmayr, Antonia aut <<The>> structure of stative verbs Antonia Rothmayr Parallelt. [Übers. des Autors]: The structure of stative verbs 2006 193 Bl.
eng: This thesis investigates the lexical-semantic structure of Kimian stative verbs (as defined by Maienborn 2003). The central is that there exist different kinds of stative verbs, both simple and complex ones. The common property of these verbs is the absence of both the DO and the BECOME operator (cf. Dowty 1979) in the lexical-semantic strucutre.
The first part sketches a picture of how stative verbs are seen in the literature: it has been assumed that stative verbs form the basic building blocks of event structure, and that there is a single grammatical feature that triggers the stative reading.
The second part examines the different types of stative verbs in greater detail. A systematic pattern of stative/eventive ambiguities is discussed. This phenomenon is analyzed as follows: the eventive reading is derived from the stative one via the insertion of the DO and/or the BECOME operator. Verbs that show this behavior include verbs that undergo the instrumental alternation (obstruct), object-experiencer verbs (depress), threaten-type verbs, dispositional verbs (help), and perception verbs (see). Moreover, several classes of statives allow for a stative reading only (subject-experiencer verbs, dative-experiencer verbs, measure verbs, verbs with a PP-complement). Crucially, these do not involve the CAUSE operator in their lexical-semantic structre. Finally, other, non-Kinian stative verbs are looked at in order to complete the picture.
