eng: The aim of this thesis was a deeper investigation of non-commutative effects in quantum-field-theoretical models, especially models on the non-commutative two-torus. The first part of the thesis concerned the non-commutative Landau problem on the torus. Using the so-called Peierls projection I further calculated the energy-corrections due to a weak periodic potential, which led to a Hofstadter-butterfly like spectrum.
The main part of the thesis concerned renormalization properties of a scalar field-theory on the non-commutative two-torus. The first step was to regularize the theory using almost finite-dimensional algebras.
Within this framework I also showed how to define a field-theory in an external magnetic field using finitely generated projective modules. In the case of the scalar, interacting theory, simple one- and two-loop corrections showed a UV/IR-mixing, which - like in the case of the non-commutative plane - destroys the renormalizability of the theory.
Nonetheless, within the framework of Polchinski's renormalization group equations and using a power-counting theorem derived by Grosse and Wulkenhaar, I was able to show that by a certain rescaling of the physical parameters of the theory, renormalizability is restored. |
