Participation to a workshop by KÖME on the People’s Theatre Street

Our team was offered the opportunity to participate in one of the regular “ideas workshop” by KÖME - Cultural Heritage Managers Association – to take place on the People’s Theatre Street (Népszínház utca) in the 8th district of Budapest. Located in “Internép Café” Nr. 26 - a transformation of the name of the former function as Internet Café of the room - this ground floor space of a Gründerzeit building, offers and organizes events, workshops and children’s camps for the diverse community living on the street and around it. The aim of the workshop was to attract attention to the transform potentials of this street segment. We played with the pavement by drawing or writing elements with chalk sticks. We also focused on the vacant ground floor spaces of the People’s Theatre Street Nr. 37 and intervened on one of the shop windows. One action was to write one of Miklós Borsik’s poems on the facade, the first two verses on Nr. 37 and the second two on Nr. 26. The poet writes about his impressions walking along the streets. In this activity, we connected the two former internet cafés with a “Poem for everyone”. KÖME is one of the social partners collaborating with the research´s team of TransHerit. Through participation and involvement in their activities, we hope to collaboratively develop an understanding of the residents´ and users´ perspective, identity and place attachment on/of the Gründerzeit housing of the “People´s Theatre Street.”
