The Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, together with the Austrian Institute for Chemistry and Technology OFI, has developed a method for the chemical restoration of acetate media, especially those affected by the chemical deterioration process referred to as “vinegar syndrome”. The chemical treatment is designed to (re-)gain material elasticity and therefore playability, enhance the digitisation process and quality due to higher physical flexibility of the material, and refresh the carrier material in terms of playability and long-time storability. The method has been patented and will be further developed for industrial applications as part of a public‐private partnership project in cooperation with NOA GmbH Vienna.
