The Phonogrammarchiv holds a collection of audio and video recordings from all fields of research with a special focus on Austrian scholars and institutions. At present the archive’s holdings comprise ca. 75,500 items, representing a total playing time of ca. 14,000 hours (including ca. 1,700 hours of video recordings). The audio-visual research documents preserved in the Phonogrammarchiv can be assigned chiefly to the humanities, especially to field linguistics and dialectology, ethnomusicology, as well as cultural and social anthropology. Core areas of the collection include the music, languages and oral traditions of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and European Roma and Sinti; Austrian folk music and various Austrian dialects; and mechanical musical instruments. A smaller part of the holdings comprises medical, zoological, and soundscape recordings.
The Phonogrammarchiv also houses a reference library of ca. 4,700 books, journal volumes and offprints.
ACCESS TO THE COLLECTION
The Phonogrammarchiv’s holdings can be searched via the published catalogues of recordings (recordings Ph 1–2000, B 1–13000), the handwritten documentation of the historical recordings, the Phonogrammarchiv’s in-house database, or via the online catalogue. The collection can be accessed for scientific research purposes only and in accordance with the legal agreements made with the individual depositors (access may be subject to differing restrictions).
