KURZBIOGRAPHIE

Berta Antonieta Tilman Pereira is a Timorese researcher, writer, and feminist scholar pursuing a PhD in Sociology and Social Anthropology at Central European University (CEU), Vienna and under a ERC funding ÖAW ISA funding for extractivism and animism in Southeast Asia. She holds an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS, University of London.

She has over eight years of experience working in Timor-Leste, including three years with La’o Hamutuk – the Institute for Development Monitoring and Analysis, where she co-conducted research on economic and political issues. Berta’s research and writing combine feminist political economy and social justice frameworks, with a focus on gender, labor, and postcolonial development.

She is a published author, with articles including Women of Timor-Leste: Unyielding in the Fight Against Oppression and Violence (Stiftung Asienhaus, 2020) Unnachgiebig im Kampf gegen Unterdrückungand From Resistence to Neoliberal Capture: NGOisation of Feminism in Timor-Leste, as well as Empowerment, Commodification or Deprivation. She has also written for Watch Indonesia!, IWDA, and Medium, and co-authored the forthcoming chapter These Are Everyone’s Streets: Student Protest at the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (2025).

An active member of Timor-Leste’s feminist movement, Berta has organized public discussions and campaigns on political economy and critical dialogue.
