KURZBIOGRAPHIE

Judith Bovensiepen ist Direktorin des Instituts für Sozialanthropologie an der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Honorarprofessorin am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie an der Universität Wien. Bevor sie diese Position übernahm, arbeitete sie als Reader in Sozialanthropologie an der University of Kent. Sie promovierte in Sozialanthropologie an der London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) und war von 2010 bis 2011 als Postdoktorandin am Musée du quai Branly in Paris tätig.

Judith Bovensiepens aktuelle Forschung konzentriert sich auf Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen, die Extraktion natürlicher Ressourcen und die Transformation animistischer Weltanschauungen durch den Einfluss sich wandelnder politischer, wirtschaftlicher und religiöser Regime. Dies ist Teil eines umfassenderen Interesses daran, wie anthropologische Ansätze zu Wissen und Unwissen genutzt werden können, um die Beziehungen zwischen Energie und Gesellschaft zu untersuchen. Judith Bovensiepens Forschung beschäftigt sich mit Südostasien, insbesondere mit Timor-Leste, wo sie seit 2005 ethnografische Feldforschung betreibt. Ihre bisherige Arbeit analysierte die Dynamiken der postkonfliktiven Wiederherstellung und untersuchte, wie Gewalt und erzwungene Vertreibung die Beziehung der Menschen zur Umwelt verändern.

Judith Bovensiepen ist Autorin der Monografie The Land of Gold: Post-conflict Recovery and Cultural Revival in independent Timor-Leste (2015, Cornell University Press) sowie Herausgeberin von The Promise of Prosperity (2018, ANU Press). Darüber hinaus hat sie zahlreiche Buchkapitel und Artikel veröffentlicht, unter anderem in renommierten Fachzeitschriften wie American Ethnologist, Anthropological Quarterly, Ethnos, Oceania und dem Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. Sie war Mitherausgeberin zweier Sonderausgaben – einer zu Megaprojects and National Development Models in Timor-Leste (TAPJA) und einer zu Wilful Blindness in Critique of Anthropology.

Derzeit arbeitet sie an einer Monografie mit dem Arbeitstitel: Oil Fever: Animism and Extractivism in Post-Revolutionary Timor-Leste.
