STRATEGIES OF READING ARCHIVAL SOURCES: THE CASE OF THE COMMISSION FOR THE AFFAIRS OF BOSNIA AND HERCEGOVINA

Amila Kasumović and Sandra Biletić revisit the archival turn, from inside and out the Archives of Bosnia and Hercegovina: The archive itself can be a subject of research, as well as an object. The Archives discussed here are, in addition, part of colonial heritage: The selection of what needed to be preserved deeply depends on power and on interpretation – the Habsburg Monarchy’s administration of Bosnia and Hercegovina is still visible in its entanglement of what has been preserved and which material is used in today’s research.

The book features numerous examples of the inner workings not only of the Commission for the Affairs of Bosnia and Hercegovina, which operated from late 1878 to mid 1879: From salt trade to individual refugees’ fates, from changes to the toll regime to archival „miscellanea“.
