Currently, Belle II is acquiring data with a luminosity of approximately 5 x 10^34/cm²/s and is expected to reach a data set of 1/ab by the end of May, thus surpassing all previous B factory experiments. The problem of sudden beam losses (SBLs), which had severely limited the accelerator's operation in previous years, has been traced back to contamination by a vacuum sealant, the residues of which are now being systematically removed from the facility. Other problems, most notably the beam blowup at the interaction point at higher bunch currents, still need to be understood.
In parallel, an upgrade of the experiment is being prepared for the years 2032-33, in which the final focusing magnets will be replaced, promising a smaller beam size and improved beam lifetime. Higher currents will be made possible by new RF cavities. The electron and positron linear injector will be upgraded as well to allow for higher center-of-mass energies and a reduced boost of the center-of-mass frame. The Belle II experiment also requires upgrade. In particular, the Marietta-Blau Institute is involved in the development of a new vertex detector based on active CMOS pixel sensors.
