The Institute's activities are based on two pillars: 

•     Projects (Particle Physics)
•     Departments (Experimental Methods)

The project groups deal with the research of fundamental particle physics questions in modern physics. The departments guarantee the long-term continuity of the experiments and contribute their expertise to various projects. 

Typically, MBI employees are assigned to a department and several project groups at the same time. The departments of the institute also operate the infrastructure, e.g. the mechanical workshop, the IT network and the clean room, while the projects ensure, among other things, participation in international research projects. In addition, there is also a project group for public relations.
