Die Tätigkteiten des Instituts ruht auf zwei Säulen:

• Projekte (Teilchenphysik)
• Fachbereiche (Experimentelle Methoden)

Die Projektgruppen beschäftigen sich mit der Erforschung fundamentaler teilchenphysikalischer Fragestellungen der modernen Physik. Die Fachbereiche garantieren die langfristige Kontinuität der Experimente und bringen ihre Expertise in verschiedene Projekte ein.

Typischerweise sind MBI-Mitarbeiter/innen gleichzeitig einem Fachbereich und mehreren Projektgruppen zugeordnet. Die Fachbereiche des Instituts betreiben auch die Infrastruktur, z.B. die mechanische Werkstätte, das EDV-Netz und den Reinraum, während die Projekte u.A. die Beteiligung an internationalen Forschungsvorhaben sicherstellen. Darüber hinaus gibt es auch eine Projektgruppe für Öffentlichkeitsarbeit.

The Institute's activities are based on two pillars:

The project groups deal with the research of fundamental particle physics questions in modern physics. The departments guarantee the long-term continuity of the experiments and contribute their expertise to various projects. 

Typically, MBI employees are assigned to a department and several project groups at the same time. The departments of the institute also operate the infrastructure, e.g. the mechanical workshop, the IT network and the clean room, while the projects ensure, among other things, participation in international research projects. In addition, there is also a project group for public relations.
