In the energy sector, Europe is aiming to replace fossil fuels such as gas and coal with renewable energies from wind, solar or hydro power.  This not only requires a new infrastructure - new power plants, grid expansion or digital infrastructure for smart grids - but also new forms of cooperation between producers and consumers. Concrete approaches are currently being developed and tested throughout Europe as part of pilot projects.

The new ITA dossier provides a brief overview about recent developments and gives recommendations for the implementation of new energy concepts. The focus is on the complexity of the factors influencing the success and effectiveness of smart grid solutions: In order to implement the concept sustainably, consumers must first be informed about the advantages and consequences. However, new energy storage solutions and a response to existing local conditions are also needed.
