The Rathenau Instituut was founded 40 years ago to strengthen the political and public debate on the societal and ethical issues surrounding science, technology, and innovation. At the beginning of this century, it was also tasked with providing knowledge about the functioning of the science system. The Rathenau Instituut primarily serves parliament and society. It is a public knowledge institution, serving as a link between science, politics, and society.

In this talk, Eefje Cuppen, director of Rathenau Instituut, will give insight into the work of Rathenau Instituut. Also, she will reflect on the role of the institute and TA institutes more broadly, in light of the transformation of the information environment and the global rise of populist politics.
