General Objectives


International nuclear fusion research pursues the goal of developing an environmentally friendly, safe and sustainable energy source. The Fusion@ÖAW Coordination Office bundles the research and development projects from Austrian research institutes and companies. In addition, Fusion@ÖAW is responsible for the dissemination of information about the current status of the ITER project to industry and other stakeholders.

ÖAW is a member of the EUROfusion consortium, which comprises 30 fusion research organisations and, behind them about 150 affiliated entities including universities and companies, from 25 European Union member states plus the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Ukraine.

EUROfusion receives funding from Euratom’s research and training programme 2014-2018 and 2019-2020 under Grant Agreement No. 633053 and finances fusion research activities in accordance with the Roadmap to the realisation of fusion energy.
