Wo:menpower at EMMA 2025: Eva Tamara Asboth & Andreas Schulz-Tomančok Explore Diversity and Media Infrastructure
18.06.2025
Their first study, “Diversity is not a problem? A comparative cross-media analysis of the journalistic representation of cultural, social and political diversity in Germany and Austria”, investigates how women and minority groups are represented in media content and professional roles while addressing the multifaceted understanding of 'diversity' shaped by different interpretations. Drawing on interviews with 12 media professionals – including editors-in-chief and journalists – the research explores the strategies used to promote diversity and the challenges faced in implementing them.
Their second contribution, “Diachronic and synchronic perspectives on the Austrian news media landscape since 1848: Insights from a News Media Infrastructure project”, offers an overview of the Austrian News Media Infrastructure (ANMI) initiative – a cornerstone within the CMC. ANMI is planned as an online interface that will provide researchers with access to media structure data; hence, we understand it as a digital research infrastructure that allows follow-up and secondary analysis. The diachronic feature enhances research covering long-term developments, while the synchronic presentation provides a snapshot of past or current media structures.
Together, these two contributions underscore the importance of both inclusive representation and robust data infrastructures in understanding and shaping the evolving media landscapes of Europe.
