How to Identify Journalists? Developing a Theoretical International Foundation for the Operationalisation of a National Comprehensive Survey of Journalists in Austria
09.10.2019Ahead of the first comprehensive survey among Austrian journalists in over ten years for the "Journalism Report VI" (due out in early 2020) the team of Journalism in Transition, a joint project of CMC and Medienhaus Wien funded by FWF - Austrian Science Fund, saw the need to re-assess the boundaries of a professsion that has been in transition in recent years, along with the entire media industry.
Andy Kaltenbrunner, Renée Lugschitz, Matthias Karmasin, and Sonja Luef revisit fundamental questions - What is journalism? What defines a journalist today? How can journalists be identified-and then recorded? - and suggest a definition based on recent journalism research and fit for an international context well beyond the scope of the comprehensive national survey carried out.
