Impressions from the IAMCR 2026 Conference in Galway.

The CMC was delighted to participate in the IAMCR 2026 Conference, held in Galway from 28 June to 2 July under the theme “Peripheries and Connections: Media, Communication, and Transformation.” Bringing together researchers from across the international media and communication community, the conference explored how communication can contribute to addressing pressing societal challenges, including climate change, migration, representation, digital inequalities and democratic transformation.

CMC researchers contributed to three conference sessions, showcasing current research on AI governance, media accountability, inclusive communication, and democratic information environments.

In the session “Governing Inclusion and Exclusion: AI and Self-Regulation in European Public Communication,”Colin Porlezza presented research conducted together with Laura Amigo Weinberger, Tobias Eberwein, Marten Juurik, Marko Milosavljević, Mari-Liisa Parder, Marie Rathmann and Krisztina Rozgonyi. The presentation examined questions of governance, inclusion and exclusion in the context of AI and European public communication.

The second contribution, “Better Together: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Inclusive Accountability in Hybrid Media Environments,” brought together CMC’s Tobias Eberwein, Marie Rathmann, Christina Krakovsky, Marina Lindmeyr, Sandra Förster and Krisztina Rozgonyi. The presentation explored how mixed-methods approaches can help develop more inclusive forms of accountability in increasingly complex and hybrid media environments.

Finally, Maren Beaufort presented Why Information Users' Understanding of Democracy Is Crucial for Communicative Justice,” highlighting the importance of citizens’ democratic orientations and understandings for creating fair and resilient information environments.

Beyond the presentations, IAMCR 2026 provided an opportunity for the CMC team to exchange ideas, discuss ongoing research and strengthen connections with colleagues from across the international media and communication research community. The CMC thanks the organisers and the University of Galway for hosting a stimulating and welcoming conference and looks forward to continuing the conversations and collaborations sparked in Galway.
