Exploring the Whole Picture: A Contemporary Perspective on Democracy, Societal Change, and Europe's Information Environments examines how the coexistence of different democratic cultures shapes today's democratic information environments—and why this matters for communicative justice, democratic resilience, and societal polarization. Drawing on comparative analyses spanning more than 15 years across up to 27 European countries and the United States, the study examines what democratic diversity means for the health and resilience of contemporary democratic societies. By analysing these environments as integrated systems, it investigates how the alignment—or misalignment—of regulatory frameworks, funding logics, media structures, journalistic roles, information supply, and citizens' democratic orientations, expectations, information repertoires, and democratic practices affects communicative justice, epistemic integrity, democratic resilience, and patterns of societal polarization.

The findings show that democratic communication is most effective where information environments correspond to citizens' democratic orientations, while persistent mismatches are associated with increasing news avoidance, declining trust in institutions and media, communicative inequalities, and evolving patterns of polarization.
