This research area includes the edition of musical works as well as of texts such as libretti and reviews.

  • Johann Joseph Fux – Works (long-term research project): In addition to the previous focus on liturgical music on the one hand and operas on the other, the genre of (sacred) oratorio, which was just as important for Fux, has recently been included in the new edition of works (start of sub-series B/II from 2023). At least two more extensive volumes will be prepared and published in 2024–26: the opera Psiche and the oratorio Santa Dimpna. Church music will be considered for further collaborations with music practice, for example with the mass “Pro gratiarum actione” (K 27) for the Cathedral Music of St Stephen. The publication of instrumental works is also being considered, in particular the frequently performed cycle Concentus musico-instrumentalis. Co-operation with the catalogue raisonné of Fux's works being compiled at the Mozarteum University and with the FWF project on Pietro Pariati, Fux's most important librettist, will support this project, as will the impetus from numerous concert and opera performances in Austria and abroad.
  • New Schubert Edition (long-term research project): In the next three years, vol. III/1 Mehrstimmige Gesänge mit Orchester and the corresponding critical report are to be published by the Viennese working group. The new findings of the edition will be presented to the public at a concert. This will be followed by preparatory work for the next volume.
  • Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (long-term research project): A volume of Brahms’ Lieder op. 84–97 (vol. VII, 5) is going to be prepared by the Viennese Working Group until 2027. A further task of the Viennese Working Group is the targeted indexing and analysis of manuscript sources on site that have not yet been considered, or only to a limited extent, in Brahms philology. This includes above all Brahms’ previously unpublished correspondence, but also music manuscripts and other written sources that can provide information about the genesis, publication and performance history as well as the reception of his works.
  • Flora et Germana. Music and cultural diplomacy for Francis II of Lorraine: The project, which is funded by the City of Vienna, provides a critical edition of the Festa da Camera Cinto il crin di sacro alloro, which Carlo Arrigoni composed in 1737/38 to mark Francis Stephen of Lorraine's ascension to the Tuscan throne. The aim is also to examine the cultural-diplomatic programme of the future Austrian emperor set out in the poetic text, and to reconstruct its historical-political context.
  • Pietro Pariati – the critical edition of the libretti: Three volumes are planned for the new target agreement period as part of this FWF project: Feste teatrali e Serenate (2 vols.) and Oratorii e componimenti sacri. The transcription of the texts (in some cases from the score) as well as the philological work and collation will be supplemented by commentaries on the text.
  • Eduard Hanslick's criticism between aesthetics, journalism and scholarship: The project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, examines the relationship between Hanslick’s activities as an aesthetic theorist, journalist, and scholar. The principal outcomes of the project are a translation of selected Hanslick reviews into English in collaboration with Thomas Grey (Stanford University) and a digital edition of Hanslick’s writings for the Neue Freie Presse (1864–1904), implemented with the help of the research unit “DH Research & Infrastructure” and already available in part on Hanslick Online.
