Raab, Thomas aut Mapping the surface theoretical investigations on embodied perception and cognition in geology and implications for geological data structures Thomas Raab 1998 173 Bl. Ill., graph. Darst. Zsfassung in dt. Sprache Graz, Techn. Die empirischen Zugehörigkeitsfunktionen der unscharfen Mengen werden über statistische Daten einer Fragebogenstudie an 55 internationalen ExpertInnen gewonnen. eng: Drawing on relevant findings of contemporary cognitive science, this thesis first outlines an alternative epistimological framework for geology, i.e., constructivism. The semantical basis of geological terminology is re-examined by considering constructive processes both on the neurobiological and the social linguistic level. The role of holistic gestalt perception in geological field observation is underpinned by some neurophysiological hypotheses, which also allow speculation about scientific explanations of two important phenomenological features of geological work: intuition and subjectivity. Furthermore, phenomenological evidence from field geology is used to evaluate recent paradigms of cognitive modeling and Artificial Intelligence. The general vagueness of geological linguistic observation-data is postulated and argued for. The empirical part, then, outlines some implications of these theoretical investigations by means of a case study on the mathematical modeling of the vagueness of linguistic joint roughness classifiers with fuzzy sets. The membership functions of the fuzzy sets are obtained by using statistical data from a questionnaire survey on 55 international experts in the fields of engineering geology and rock mechanics.
