ger: Popowitsch (1705-1774) war der erste Lehrer fuer deutsche Sprache an der Universitaet Wien und streitbarer Gegenspieler Gottscheds, des einflussreichsten Grammatikers jener Zeit. Popowitsch stellt dabei keineswegs den Typus eines oberdeutsch-provinziellen Grammatikers dar, nur vereinzelt haben sueddeutsche Positionen Eingang in seine Sprachlehre gefunden. Er tritt fuer Schaffung eines Hochdeutsch auf der Basis einer ueberregionalen Ausgleichssprache ein. Der in dieser Arbeit angestellte Vergleich mit anderen Grammatikern Mitte des 18.<br />Jahrhunderts (Antesperg, Gottsched und Aichinger) weist ihn als durchaus eigenstaendigen Denker aus. Seine Bedeutung liegt auf den Gebieten Alphabet und Lautlehre sowie Deklination des Substantivs. Er strebt eine auf phonologischem Prinzip basierende Orthographie an und stellt neue Grapheme (fuer CH, SCH und TSCH) sowie diakritische Zeichen zur Anzeige von Vokalquantitaeten und - qualitaeten zur Diskussion. Er konnte sich mit seinen reformorthographischen Vorschlaegen zumeist nicht durchsetzen. Auf dem Gebiet der Substantivflexion lehrt er ein Deklinationssystem, das klarer strukturiert und in sich einheitlicher ist als die Systeme seiner Zeitgenossen. Im Bereich des Wortschatzes spricht er sich gegen einen uebermaessigen Gebrauch von Fremdwoertern aus und empfiehlt, das Hochdeutsche bei Bedarf durch Lexeme aus den oberdeutschen Dialekten zu erweitern

eng: Popowitsch /1705-1774) was the first German language professor at the University of Vienna, and he was a combative opponent of Gottsched, the most influential grammarian at this time. Popowitsch by no means represents a provincial grammarian, he only mentions Upper German position infrequently in his language primer. He pleads for the development of a High German based on a supra-regional compromise. The comparison with other grammarians in the middle of the 18th century (Antesperg, Gottsched and Aichinger) shows Popowitsch as an independent thinker. His major contributions were in the fields of 'alphabet and phonetics' and 'declension of the substantive'. He aims at an orthography based on phonological principles, and argues for the introduction of new graphemes (for CH, SCH and TSCH), and argues for diacritics to mark different quantities and qualities of vowels. But he was not successful with his proposals for a reform of the orthography.<br />The system of substantive declensions which he teaches is structured more clearly and is more consistant than those of his contemporaries. In the field of vocabulary he opposes the undue use of foreign words and suggests introducing Upper German dialectal words into High German if required.
