Der italienische Humanist und Dichter Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) entschloss sich um 1350, seine früheren Briefe und die der kommenden Jahre in einer Sammlung zu vereinen. Die Korrespondenzen gelten verschiedensten Themen, wechseln zwischen Erzählung und Belehrung, Persönlichem und Allgemeinem und richten sich an gelehrte Freunde, Machthaber und andere Zeitgenossen. Sie sind eine Fundgrube zur Geistesgeschichte. Nachdem Band 1 bereits im Jahr 2005 erschienen ist, wird die erste Gesamtausgabe der berühmten 24 Bücher der Epistolae familiares in deutscher Sprache mit dem jetzt vorgelegten zweiten Band (Buch 13-24) abgeschlossen. Die Briefe wurden von einer ausgewiesenen Petrarca-Kennerin, Prof. Dr. Berthe Widmer, aus dem Lateinischen übersetzt. Der Übersetzung ist ein detaillierter Stellenkommentar zu heute weithin unbekannten Realien beigegeben, z.B. zu erwähnten Personen, Autoren und Orten. Außerdem werden die Briefe durch ein kommentiertes Verzeichnis der Adressaten sowie eine Übersicht über die Briefinhalte erschlossen. Eine ausführliche Einleitung verortet die Briefe im Kontext des Gesamtwerks und der Zeit. Die Briefe sind ein hochrangiges Dokument der Literaturgeschichte und für alle Philologien sowie für Historiker und Philosophiehistoriker von unschätzbarem Wert. In 1350, the Italian humanist and poet Francesco Petrarca decided to form a collection of all his correspondence. The letters deal with multifarious topics, switch between narration and instruction, the personal and the general, and are addressed to various of his learned friends and contemporaries. They constitute a treasure trove for the history of ideas. This is the first complete German-language edition of the famous 24 books of the Epistolae familiares; they have been translated from the Latin by Prof. Berthe Widmer, an acknowledged authority on Petrarch. The translation is accompanied by a detailed commentary on the texts, giving factual information on aspects which are largely unknown today, for example on persons, authors and places mentioned. Access to the letters is further facilitated by an annotated index of the addressees and an overview of the contents of the letters. A detailed introduction locates the letters in the context of Petrarch's complete works and his age. The letters represent a most important document in the history of literature and are of inestimable value for all literary scholars and historians as well as for historians of philosophy.
