Commemorating the Dormition of Mary in Byzantine Antioch: The Interplay of Apocrypha, Homiletics and Liturgy in the Eleventh Century

The RevIdEM project team warmly invites you to a public lecture given by PI Adrian Pirtea on Thursday, 22 January 2026 (17:30–20:30) at Central European University – Vienna Campus, Vienna, Austria (hybrid format).

In this talk, Adrian Pirtea will trace the history of traditions surrounding the commemoration of the Dormition of Mary in Greek, Syriac, and other Eastern Christian languages, exploring how apocryphal texts, homiletic discourse, and liturgical practice intersected in Byzantine Antioch in the eleventh century and shaped devotional and ritual forms across linguistic and cultural boundaries. The lecture will illuminate the dynamic interplay between literary and liturgical expressions of Mary’s Dormition and their broader significance for medieval Christian piety.
