This lecture explores how French industry was radically reorganised under the Vichy regime (1940-1944), as it sought to emulate the Nazi model. More importantly, crucial institutions created by Vichy were maintained after the war and formed the institutional foundation of the Monnet Plan and later of the European Coal and Steel Community. By tracing the history of French industrial organisation over this tumultuous period, this lecture aims to reassess the origins of Europe’s first supranational institutions.

Luc-André Brunet is Lecturer in Twentieth-Century European History at the Open University and Deputy Head of the LSE IDEAS Cold War Studies Project. Previously he was Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute and Pinto Postdoctoral Fellow in Contemporary International History at the London School of Economics, where he earned his PhD in International History. He is the author of the book “Forging Europe. Industrial Organisation in France, 1940-1952”, to be published in 2017.
