Research interests

My research focuses on two main areas (gravitational waves and particle physics)united by a common pillar: the development and use of advanced analysis methodologies based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. In gravitational-wave science, I coordinate the gravitational-wave activities at MBI, leading the local Einstein Telescope Research Unit and the Virgo Group. Within the Einstein Telescope Collaboration I chair the AI board (AI-for-ET) and the task force on intermediate-mass black holes, and I develop machine-learning methods to search for the gravitational waves emitted when such objects form through the coalescence of lighter black holes — searches that can already be performed today with the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA detector network, of which I am a member. I am also a Fellow of EuCAIF, the European Coalition for AI in Fundamental Physics. In particle physics, I study the smallest known constituents of the universe — quarks and leptons — searching for anomalies in their behaviour that could point to new forces of nature or unknown particles. With the Belle and Belle II experiments, my work includes searches for dark bosons in visible and invisible final states, tests of lepton flavour universality in tau decays, the measurement of V<sub>us</sub>, and the determination of the absolute leptonic branching fractions of the tau lepton. From 2020 to 2025 this research was supported by my ERC Starting Grant InterLeptons. I am originally from Palermo, Sicily, and studied Astronomy at the University of Bologna (BSc, 2008), Nuclear Physics in Groningen (MSc, 2011), and Particle Physics in London (PhD, 2014). I then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at DESY, Hamburg, on the Belle II experiment (2014–2017) before joining the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, where I have been based since 2017, leading my own research group since 2020.
