The citation for the award reads: “For contributions to advancing the time-of-flight resolution of radiation detectors, implementing high-frequency readout, and passing on knowledge to the next generation of scientists.” This prestigious award pays tribute to Dr Gundacker’s cutting-edge research in time-resolved detector development for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) and high-energy physics, which he has been conducting for over ten years. In medicine, these detectors will help to construct better, more affordable imaging devices and achieve earlier detection and treatment of cancer and degenerative neurological diseases. In high-energy physics, these developments have already helped to build particle detectors in the CERN-CMS barrel timing layer, and will further improve detector performance in the quest to better understand the foundation of our universe. The award ceremony took place at the 2025 IEEE NSS/MIC conference in Yokohama, Japan (see picture).
