ISA International Online Guest Lecture: Samara Broglia de Moura
A TECHNOLOGICAL AND TYPOLOGICAL APPROACH
This presentation offers an overview of ceramic production in the Himalayan region of Ladakh (Northern India) from Protohistory onward (3rd millennium BCE to 17th century CE). Focusing on a detailed technological and typological analysis, the talk will describe in a diachronic manner, the different aspects of a ceramic production as the preparation of clays, fashioning, finishing, decoration and typology. The aim is to understand how these productions changed over time, how they were organized in the territory and how they were influenced by the neighbouring regions of Central Asia, India and Tibet.
Samara Broglia de Moura is a PhD student in archeology at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE, PSL Research University). Since 2015, she has been conducting research on ceramic productions in Ladakh, which aims to discover new chronologies for the region and understand the material and cultural interactions that Ladakh has had with its neighbors in Central Asia, Tibet, and India over different periods. Since 2011, she has taken part in several archaeological missions for excavations or study of the ceramics in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Nepal and India. She also collaborated in the studies of ceramics and excavations of the Franco-Indian Archaeological Mission in Ladakh on the Leh Choskhor archaeological site. She was involved in various research and professional projects: research assistant at the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan (DAFA); research assistant for the Franco-Turkmen Archaeological Mission in Turkmenistan (MAFTur); and currently, she works as excavation supervisor for Eveha International.
