The Changing Face of Early Islamic History
Scholarship over the past half century has profoundly transformed our understanding of Islam's origins, affecting both our sense of the character of the original movement itself, and of its relationship to the well-established religious and cultural traditions of the Late An- tique Near East. This talk will review the intellectual and methodological developments that resulted in these changes in our perception, and note some of the scholars whose work contributed to our new point of view.
