Univ. Prof. Dr. Marcia C. Schenck (https://www.marciacschenck.com) has been a global history professor at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 2020. She holds a PhD in history from Princeton University and an MSc in African Studies from the University of Oxford. She has also taught at Princeton, Humboldt University, Free University of Berlin, Mount Holyoke College, and in various international consortia, such as the Global History Lab at Cambridge University and the Europen UniverCity Alliance (EDUC).
Her research focuses on various forms of human mobility, including education, labor migration, and refuge-seeking. She also has a broad interest in knowledge production, global history, oral history, and the history of international organizations. Currently, she is working on a monograph about the Organization of African Unity’s refugee management during the decolonization era (under contract with Indiana University Press).
Dr. Schenck has published in academic journals such as Africa,African Economic History, and Labor History, and co-edited a special issue titled Rethinking Refuge: Processes of Refuge Seeking in Africa for Africa Today. Her latest books include the open-access monograph Remembering Labor Migration to the Second World: Socialist Mobilities between Angola, Mozambique, and East Germany (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), the co-edited anthology The Right to Research: Historical Narratives by Refugee & Global South Researchers (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2023), and the co-edited open access volume Navigating Socialist Encounters: Moorings and (Dis)Entanglements between Africa and East Germany during the Cold War (De Gruyter Oldenbourg, 2021).
Additionally, she is the founder of the History Dialogues Project, and the co-founder of the H-Net Refugees in African History Network.
