#asmosia2021

Dear colleagues,

it is our privilege to invite you on behalf of the ASMOSIA Executive Committee to join us in the 13th ASMOSIA meeting which will take place in Vienna, Austria between September 20 and 25, 2021.

The topics of the conference will deal with the basic theme of ASMOSIA, which is the investigation of all kinds of stones in the interface of archaeology and natural sciences. Besides the exchange of experience, and knowledge the conference intends to demonstrate progress and results in our field during the last years. In this sense the meeting shall offer a platform for discussion and reunion of the ASMOSIA “family”.

The sessions will encompass provenance and use of marbles and other stones, quarrying techniques and transport, weathering problems and restoration, and several more. As the conference will take place at the external frontier of the Roman Empire north of the Alps we will organize a session on
»Production and trade of marble and other stones in the Alpine and Danube provinces – regional resources and Mediterranean imports«.

Particular focus will be on poster sessions to these topics, planned as a separate program item without any parallel sessions.

Vienna offers several advantages for carrying out this conference, such as:

  • Easy accessibility in the centre of Europe, as Vienna is a hub of European and international transport.
  • Longstanding tradition of interdisciplinary archaeological-scientific activities in various of different institutions for more than 150 years.
  • 425 hotels in all categories with 34,678 rooms and a broad range of cultural attractions

The venue will be the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien and its Ephesos Museum in the very centre of Vienna. The location offers elegant surroundings with an appropriate infrastructure in an imperial atmosphere.

Looking forward very much to meeting you in Vienna!
