The concept of the Acoustics Research Institute (ARI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) relies on various pillars: the interdisciplinary research in acoustics, application-open fundamental research, the collaborations within and outside the institute, the openness to new fields of research, public relations. And a strong commitment to reproducible research.

We understand reproducible research as the publication of the research outcome accompanied by the corresponding data and software. Many researchers often struggle with missing software implementations of published algorithms or missing machine-readable data. While they can be re-implemented or retrieved based on the corresponding publication, the results sometimes deviate from the originally published ones because of missing details or inaccuracies in estimating the data and parameters not fully included in the description. To this end, the published articles can be considered as a description of the actual research only.

To avoid such problems and support the reproducible research, we at the ARI develop and publish software toolboxes accompanying our scientific articles. These toolboxes include the LTFAT (Large Time-Frequency Analysis Toolbox) and the AMT (Auditory Modeling Toolbox), which are maintained by the ARI and have many contributors worldwide. Such toolboxes allow other researchers to reproduce and build upon our work. We believe that only the publishing software and data jointly with the scientific articles makes sustainable research possible in the first place.
