Participation of ITA at ScienceWeek@Austria 2002 "Sustainability – What's that?"

At this event within the framework of the Austrian ScienceWeek 2002 (June 10-13, 2002), the notion of "sustainability" was addressed from various perspectives with a view to making it more understandable, in particular for schoolchildren.

DThe Science Week was a good opportunity to present socially relevant ideas and scientific findings about "sustainability" in collaboration with administration and research to understand and to facilitate the bridge between science, administration and society. Through the cooperation of our partners it was possible to provide information for over 100 students and teachers, organise interdisciplinary discussions with experts. and initiate new ideas for school projects.

The event consisted of the representation of a number of examples of issues: environmental management, network for sustainability, eco-labels, local and regional projects and books related to sustainability, climate alliance and projects of the schools and Eco-Design. A brief description of the parts is available in the handout (German). Parallel to the exhibition discussions (a total of five discussion groups) took place between experts from different disciplines and students. The aim of the discussions was to present the interdisciplinary nature of research for sustainable development to students in practice.

The students had an opportunity to discuss with experts from different disciplines, they could get answers to their questions and learn about aspects of several experts and may have different opinions. A summary of this interdisciplinary debate is now available online. The documentation includes keywords which were collected during the discussion (in the Annex to the documentation), and a brief summary provided by the respective moderators.
