The National Socialist City Administration as an Instrument of Terror and Persecution

A Comparative Analysis of the Dominion of Vienna, 1938–1945

Our research project “The National Socialist City Administration as an Instrument of Terror and Persecution: A Comparative Analysis of the Dominion of Vienna, 1938–1945” aims to situate and contextualise the city administration of Vienna and other Austrian cities from the “Anschluss” in 1938 to the end of the Nazi regime by comparative reference to the practice of National Socialist rule in city administrations in the German Reich since 1933. Our focus is on the role of municipal administration as an instrument of terror and persecution, as well as room for manoeuvre and strategies of action.
