Köln, [Germany] ; Weimar, [Germany] ; Wien, [Austria] : Böhlau Verlag, 2015. ©2015 1 online resource (386 p.) text rdacontent computer rdamedia online resource rdacarrier Description based upon print version of record. Sites of Knowledge combines the history of the University of Vienna with the history of its buildings. The evolution of one of Central Europe"s oldest universities is laid out in essays on the Alma Mater Rudolphina from the points of view of history of architecture and of art, history of science and of the university. This history sets off from the former Duke"s College in Vienna"s inner city district of Stubenviertel and continues via the "Palace of Knowledge" on the Ringstrasse and the glass building Juridicum at Schottenbastei to more recent buildings erected in the Alsergrund district. Each of these buildings represents its own era and at the same time constitutes a lasting expression of the way the university, which is now the largest in the German-speaking realm, has actively shaped its own role. In English. Frontmatter -- Table of Contents -- Preface by the Rector -- Sites of Knowledge. An Introduction -- Acknowledgements -- The Old University Quarter. The Mediaeval University -- The University and the Society of Jesus. Collegium Academicum Viennense (1624 – 1755) -- The Neue Aula on “Unteres Jesuiterplatzl” (after 1857 Academy of Sciences) -- The Purpose of the New University Building -- The University of Vienna in the Eighteenth Century. Distance from the Church, Appropriation by the State, Expansion -- The Josephine Building Complex. Allgemeines Krankenhaus, Garnisonspital, Narrenturm and Josephinum -- Libraries as Repositories of Knowledge for Teaching and Research. A brief history of the University of Vienna library sites since 1365 -- Vormärz, the 1848 Revolution and the Loss of the Old University -- Towards A “New University”. The Era of Reforms 1849 – 1873 -- Siteless Knowledge? The University’s Dislocation and the Search for a Site for the New Building -- The Minor Monumental Building. The Department of Chemistry as the First Post - 1848 University Building -- The Main Building. An Architectural Victory of Light Over Darkness -- The University Library as a Repository of Memory for Study, Research and Teaching. A brief history of the University of Vienna library sites after 1777 -- The Secularised Upwards Gaze? The New University Observatory on Türkenschanze -- Beyond the Ringstraße. Viennese University Buildings until the End of the Habsburg Monarchy -- The Main Building. Twentieth Century Transformations -- The Refurbishment of the Main Building Aula and Arcaded Courtyard at the Beginning of the Twenty-First Century -- A Great Achievement.
