Descripció
Other title:Ennodius, Magnus F.: Theoderich-Panegyricus
Sumari:eng: The works of Ennodius were rarely transmitted during the Middle Ages. There are at least 15 manuscripts dating from the 9th to the 17th century which include the text of the panegyric on Theoderic. The author points out the importance of the two oldest manuscripts (Brussels, Royal Library 9845-9848 and Rome, Vatican Library lat. 3803). Each manuscript is described in detail with special reference to the history of the book. Some more manuscripts containing only other works of Ennodius but not the panegyric on Theoderic are also described. After surveying the transmission of the works of Ennodius the author analyzes the cultural influence of Ennodius from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. The general introduction includes a survey of the life and works of Ennodius. Furthermore it is shown that the panegyric was written in spring 507 A.D. and presented only in a written form to intervent for Faustus Iunior niger (consul. of 490 A.D.). The author also gives an introduction into the language, style, and topical motifs of the panegyric. Finally the historical value of the content is analyzed. The critical edition includes an analysis of the philological value of the texts transmitted in the manuscripts and of the passages with uncertain transmission. The translation into German is the first complete one since 1858. The notes cannot be an extensive commentary. They only give explanations to understand the incomprehensible passages and historical circumstances.
