Francesca Ferlaino

Francesca Ferlaino is a Professor at the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck and one of the Research Directors at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI-Innsbruck) of the ÖAW. Her research activity explores quantum phenomena in atomic gases at ultralow temperatures. Over the last years, she focuses specifically on a strongly magnetic and rather unexplored atomic species, Erbium (Er). In 2012, Ferlaino’s group achieved the first worldwide Bose- Einstein condensation of Er and shortly after produced the first degenerate Fermi gas. She studied dipolar phenomena, exotic complex scattering processes, and the behaviour of atomic magnets in light crystals.  Future ESQ Postdocs will develop their research profile on the emerging field of dipolar quantum gases with strongly magnetic lanthanide atoms.
