The Victor-Franz-Hess Prize has been awarded since 1987 for outstanding doctoral theses in the field of nuclear and particle physics.
Since 2021, the Victor-Franz-Hess Prize has been awarded as part of the ÖPG Dissertation Prizes. The dissertation to be awarded must have been submitted and approved at an Austrian university. Furthermore, the approval should not have been more than two calendar years ago. In the interest of supporting young researchers, the prize recipient should generally not be older than 35 years. Nominations may be submitted by any ÖPG member, but not by the person to be awarded themselves. Nominations are to be addressed to the Chairperson of the Nuclear and Particle Physics Division.
