CONFERENCE: MUD FUTURES-SCALING UP

Examining the discourse of mud

Mud Futures – Scaling Up is an online Conference co-hosted by the Institute for Social Anthropology (ISA) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), organised by Hubert Feiglstorfer in cooperation with Sushant University.

Mud Futures is a global year long, multi-host and multi-location conclave on the futures of mud in architecture, conceptualised and conducted by the School of Art and Architecture, Sushant University (India).

Scaling Up examines the discourse of mud as a mainstream material of the people. It addresses the challenges mud undergoes as it moves between private and public realms, as well as the social, ecological and formational implications of its changing utilisation.

The expanding use of mud through new techniques and methods raises questions regarding the acceptability as evidenced through mechanical replication of the material or its continued co-existence with people and practices.

Scaling Up will explore a range of questions, such as:

  • What are the social, economic, ecological and technical implications of scaling up?
  • What are the best ways to scale up?
  • What challenges does scaling up present, and what are its limits?
  • What changes and adaptations take place during the process of scaling up?
  • What preconceived notions shape approaches to scaling up?
  • What are the dynamic relationships of mud and other natural building materials?
  • What potential does mud hold as a mass produced building product?
  • Can mechanical replication be replaced by human hands?
  • Is scaling up possible through customization?
  • What lessons can be learned from regional and transregional studies of scaling up?
  • How does scaling up differ across rural and urban spaces?
