The significance of unpublished parts of pre-modern Histories of Iran: the case of the Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh Ḥasanī

Webinar series "Pre-modern Islamic manuscripts"

Online lecture by Prof. Javad Abassi | Ferdawsi University, Mashhad, IR Iran

When editing major sources for the history of pre-modern Iran, traditional scholarship has often omitted large parts of text and paratext contained in original manuscripts.  This is specially the case for sections that might contain special information about the time in which the text was composed or the manuscript copied. In this paper, I will argue that those often-neglected parts could become especially relevant sources of information for the study of the history of the period. To illustrate this point, this paper will investigate aspects of the textual tradition of the Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh Ḥasanī of Tāj al-Dīn Ḥasan Ibn Shihāb Yazdī (fl. 1453) as a case study.
