The Ottoman reception of the Nuzhat al-Qulūb (c. 1340), a Persian encyclopaedic work by Ḥamdallāh Mustawfī Qazvīnī

Webinar series "Pre-modern Islamic manuscripts"

Online ZOOM lecture by Sacha Alsancakli | University of Münster

Abstract This presentation explores the Ottoman reception of the Nuzhat al-Qulūb (“Delight of the Hearts”), a Persian encyclopaedic work composed in 1340 by Ḥamdallāh Mustawfī Qazvīnī, financial officer for the Ilkhanids. Drawing upon an analysis of extant manuscripts, I will provide a preliminary outline of the book’s transmission and circulation in Ottoman lands, with particular focus on paratextual elements such as endowment and ownership notes, seals, marginalia, and others. Additionally, I will examine another dimension of the Nuzhat’s Ottoman reception by discussing the Turkish translation produced at the court of Abdāl Khān (r. 1622–1664), Kurdish emir of Bidlīs. Finally, I will present preliminary findings that highlight a developing interest in the Nuzhat from the early seventeenth century, and I will consider the factors contributing to its increasing significance during this period.
