Modern Persian Literature

Second European Roundtable

Thursday 15.01.2026 , duration: 2 days
(c) Florian Schwarz

The Second European Roundtable on Modern Persian Literature is co-organised by the Institute of Iranian Studies and the University of New South Wales with generous support from the Soudavar Memorial Foundation, Geneva.

Modern Persian literature has developed across all major genres—prose, poetry, drama, and criticism—since the early twentieth century, creating a rich literary tradition that continues to evolve. The research focus of this roundtable is to bring into attention works, topics, and critical approaches that challenge and pluralise the present understanding of the modern Persian/Iranian literary system and help to re-conceptualise its development. It will provide a forum for scholarly discussion and establish foundations for ongoing collaboration in the field.

Following the successful first European Roundtable held at the University of Bamberg in July 2024, this second gathering will convene at the Institute of Iranian Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

Attendance: This event is open to the public. Those interested in attending are encouraged to contact Robert Steele for further information.
