Quantum Light: a spectrally-tuneable source of entangled photons from quantum emitters in hexagonal Boron Nitride at room temperature

In this project, we will implement an integrated source of single or entangled photons based on quantum emitters in hexagonal Boron nitride (hBN) that can be spectrally tuned via the Stark effect and does not require cryogenic cooling. The quantum emitters will reside inside a waveguide and thus most of the emission will be directed along the waveguide in a defined mode. Such a platform will not only create entangled photons for quantum spectroscopy or quantum information protocols but it constitutes a rich playing field for quantum optics such as for investigating the interaction of a pre-defined number of quantum emitters.

The ESQ discovery grant allows us to pursue high-risk but very promising research in a very novel field of quantum technology. At this early stage of the project, the flexible funding scheme will allow us to get first important results and it is thus an indispensable stepping stone for future work in room temperature solid-state quantum optics.
